No matter what the application, diesel fuel is prone to degradation by dirt, water, bio growth and just plain age. Each of these contaminants can ruin injector pumps, injectors and/or clog filters. But all of our Nauticats are fitted with primary and secondary filters, to remove all these hazards. So what's to be done beyond this?
For some years now, articles on fuel contamination have appeared in sailing, yachting, fishing, truck and heavy equipment periodicals talking about various types of additives, special filters that spin out or coalesce water, as well as strategies for the use of fuel cleaning services. These measures certainly defend the engine against this barrage of hazards but, over the winter our fuel is building up a new batch of moisture, bacteria and algae.
In recent years a new fuel treatment device has come onto the market, which directly addresses the Bio part of the problem. Invented by a New Zealand marine engineer, this device subjects the fuel to a strong and contorted magnetic field as it passes through. The bacteria become disassociated from their colonies and are further disrupted in their cellular electrostatic balance. This process renders them small enough to pass through even the secondary filters and become burned in the engine. That portion which returns to the tank is inhibited in its ability to propagate for some time.
The overall result is that:
- filters have a longer life
- the lack of bacterial propagation reduces the acid level
- the fuel burns more efficiently
- fuel lines, tank walls, injectors and other engine parts are cleaner.
The next logical step is to build an independent system to circulate the fuel, when the engine is off and time permits the cleaning of all the Deisel stored. This process is called Fuel Polishing and requires an additional pump, a big filter, some valves and a Fuel Mag.
Fuel Mag is the original New Zealand-produced item. Other brands are Algae-X or De-Bug. Fuel Mag can be obtained from various suppliers but the national rep is:LLC Cape Canaveral, Florida. Phone 1-800-825-4239 talk to Mike Forcella for a local distributor .
